Visit to the Gulf Coast Region
October 3, 2005
|
President Clinton visits the Gulf Coast region Tuesday and Wednesday
to see firsthand the devastation brought by Hurricane Katrina in August
and to learn about recovery efforts already underway in Louisiana, Mississippi,
and Alabama. President Clinton, in partnership with President George H.W.
Bush, is spearheading a nationwide campaign to raise private funds for hurricane
relief. The Presidents established the Bush-Clinton
Katrina Fund to receive those donations. |
President Clinton will visit five cities
affected by Hurricane Katrina— New
| Orleans and Baton Rouge, Louisiania;
Gulfport and Forest Heights, Mississippi; and Bayou La Batre, Alabama.
President Clinton will meet with local officials and survivors as he
begins to assess how best to spend the more than $100 million raised through
the Bush-Clinton Katrina
Fund. The purpose of the fund is to identify and address gaps in government
funding so that the region's long-term recovery is ensured.

With 90,000 square miles of the Gulf Coast region declared a federal disaster
area, many communities are in need.
President Clinton said before his trip, "I want to thank all of you who
have so generously supported the efforts to help survivors of Hurricane Katrina.
Whether you have volunteered your time, assisted people who have been evacuated
to your area, or made a contribution to the Bush-Clinton Katrina Fund, the Salvation
Army, the Red Cross, or one of the many other organizations working hard to
help our fellow Americans, your outpouring of support means a great deal to
the survivors at this tragic time."
