Commitment to Sustainability

From the beginning of the initial design, President Clinton wanted his Presidential Center to be an educational project demonstrating green building design, construction, and operation.

LEED Certification

Upon completion of the Clinton Presidential Center, the Library was recognized with a Silver LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Certification by the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC). In 2005, the Library was awarded with two Green Globes by the Green Building Initiative (GBI) for best practices in energy and environmental design. In 2007, through additional sustainability practices, the Library received a Platinum LEED Certification for Existing Buildings from the USGBC, the only federally maintained facility to receive this recognition. As the first LEED certified building in the state, the Clinton Library has become a catalyst for sustainability for non-profit, governmental, private, and commercial properties in Arkansas.

The Green Roof

Inside and out, the Center utilizes a variety of sustainability programs that reduce costs and its impact on the environment. In November 2007, the construction of a green roof on the Library was completed, adding green space to the Center that provides a habitat for plants, reduces storm water runoff, lessens urban heat island effects, improves energy efficiency, controls temperature, conserves water and cleans the air.

Future Plans

Maintaining its commitment to sustainability, the Center has plans to LEED and GBI certify both the historic Choctaw station built in 1899 that houses the Little Rock Foundation offices, as well as the Clinton Museum Store building. Continuous improvement and periodic re-certification of green operations will continue for the life of all the buildings.
