HEAL Community Benefits
HEAL was designed to benefit communities by lowering greenhouse gas (GHG) Emissions, providing training opportunities for citizens, stimulating local economies through spending on retrofits, and lessening employer exposure to volatile energy costs.
Impact of Retrofits
The energy efficiency retrofits have numerous and lasting impacts on employees and their communities:
- Lower Energy Bills: HEAL's goal is to decrease homeowners' energy bills by an average of 20% or more. This reduction in monthly costs means that more income will be available to pay for food, medicine, and other basic expenses, improving that family's standard of living.
- Safer, More Comfortable Homes: Retrofits are designed to eliminate drafts and reduce discomfort issues caused by leakage in the home. A tight, insulated home means the thermostat can be lowered without affecting comfort levels. Audits also determine if any appliances are causing unsafe levels of carbon monoxide, or if other indoor air quality, moisture, or safety problems are present.
- A Stronger Local Economy: HEAL's focus is on low-to-moderate income earners. A reduction in energy expense increases these earners' disposable incomes, freeing up funds for groceries, prescriptions and other locally available staples, and thereby boosting the local economy. In addition, the program creates local green jobs by training Arkansans in energy efficient home improvements.
