Green Jobs Training Serving Low- to-Moderate Income Homeowners

By enlisting AmeriCorps service members to increase the green building workforce, the HEAL program made it possible for homeowners to complete energy efficient retrofits at a price substantially lower than market. AmeriCorps service members commit a year of full-time service to the HEAL program, which includes an intensive green building and construction training program.  After training is complete, they are deployed to HEAL client homes to complete specified energy efficiency measures including insulation installation, air sealing, and lighting retrofits. This valuable volunteer labor significantly reduces the cost of energy-efficient home improvements for low-to-moderate income homeowners.

Since the inception of the HEAL program, volunteers with the program have achieved 87 HEAL AR proficiency certifications, 23 Red Cross First Aid and CPR certifications, 21 LEED Green Associate Accreditations,  17 Energy Rating Field Technician designations, 13 AmeriCorps advanced level training certifications, 12 AmeriCorps Service House Leaders, 15 RESNET certified HERS raters, 6 service utility van drivers (w/trailer towing capacity, four AmeriCorps Service Team Leaders, 9 BPI Building Analyst certifications, and two AmeriCorps Service Unit Leaders.

For homeowners at moderate income levels or greater, HEAL works to engage local contractors to implement the energy efficiency improvements.  This provides jobs and income for local contractors and building supply outlets.
