Major Program Teams have been established around CHAI’s core competencies in order to advance key objectives and support country operations. CHAI’s Major Program Teams include: Pediatric, Rural, Operations Research (CSHOR), and Clinical Training.

CHAI has introduced clinical training and mentoring programs in select developing countries as part of its efforts to expand treatment for people living with HIV/AIDS. These programs are aimed specifically at providing healthcare managers and workers with extensive training in clinical care and healthcare management.

1. Position/Title: Clinical Mentor
Location: Vietnam

The Clinton Foundation HIV/AIDS Initiative (CHAI) works with partner governments in more than sixty countries to help bring effective, high-quality HIV treatment and care to people infected with HIV. All CHAI programs are initiated at the request of the local government. National programs scaling up adult and pediatric HIV/AIDS treatment need knowledgeable, skilled clinicians to mentor and train local staff in comprehensive HIV diagnosis, care and treatment. We are looking for an experienced HIV physician with pediatric experience to work side by side with local clinical staff to improve both access to high-quality treatment and efficiency of HIV clinic management.

The mentor will rotate through various CHAI-supported HIV clinics throughout the country and assist in the scale-up of clinics just beginning to prescribe pediatric antiretroviral medications, as well as increase the capacity of those already delivering pediatric HIV care. The mentor will help to increase the identification and follow-up care of HIV exposed/infected pediatric patients.

The goal of the clinical mentoring program is to assist our partner governments with the creation of more self-sufficient, self-sustainable HIV identification and treatment centers. The Pediatric Mentor will be in a position to dramatically influence pediatric care and expand access to comprehensive HIV/AIDS treatment.

Responsibilities:

  • Train and mentor clinicians in the didactic and practical matters of pediatric HIV care
  • Improve systems for identification of HIV exposed infants and children
  • Train and mentor in PMTCT
  • Assist in maximizing the efficiency of clinic systems as they relate to pediatric HIV care
  • Produce clinical training and reference materials for ART sites
  • Travel to prospective ART sites to assess and report their needs and readiness from both a clinical and health system perspective. This includes a capacity assessment of the health workers, lab and patient referral network, drug management capacity, and willingness and enthusiasm of local leadership and health workers.
  • Travel frequently to established ART sites throughout Vietnam to provide pediatric HIV/AIDS clinical and pharmacological mentoring to local health workers. Activities include the following:
    • Building clinical capacity of local doctors
    • Assisting doctors and other health workers to improve the operation of the clinic and the patient referral network
    • Improve adherence to national guidelines, procedures, and SOPs
    • Assess and formally report the progress of the mentoring visits
    • Provide clinical training to national and regional clinicians during monthly case conference where participants bring their challenging cases

Skills Required:

  • Strong knowledge and experience with Pediatric HIV/AIDS
  • Ability to undertake the training of adult learners
  • Understanding of healthcare systems in resource-limited settings
  • Excellent communication skills – both written and oral
  • Respect for the political process and protocols involved in government programs

Skills Desired:

  • Working knowledge of Vietnamese
  • Previous work in Asia
  • Cultural understanding of Vietnam
  • Previous work in public health policy or related development arena

Education/Experience:

  • Physician with strong pediatric experience
  • Experience in providing direct care and ARV treatment to HIV positive infants and children
  • Teaching and/or training experience
  • Experience in developing countries is a plus

2. Position/Title: Monitoring and Evaluation Analyst
Location: Boston, MA

The Clinton Foundation HIV/AIDS Initiative (CHAI) is seeking a highly motivated individual with strong analytical and communications skills to fill the position of Monitoring and Evaluation Analyst within CHAI’s Boston office.

Description:

The Monitoring and Evaluation (M&E) Analyst will be a member of CHAI’s Boston-based M&E Team, whose mandate is to collect and analyze data to support and improve HIV prevention and treatment programs. This position will primarily be focused on supporting and improving the monitoring and evaluation of CHAI’s Pediatric Initiative, particularly aspects influencing retention.

Responsibilities include:

  • Identify critical indicators and establish monitoring and evaluation systems for CHAI programs, with a focus on pediatric HIV/AIDS care and treatment programs;
  • Assist in the design, implementation and analysis of programmatic evaluations, with a focus on pediatric HIV/AIDS care and treatment programs;
  • Provide technical assistance to CHAI teams, government, and organizational partners to enhance data management systems for improved quality of HIV care and treatment;
  • Collect, manage and analyze data to support and improve quality of HIV care and treatment, with a focus on pediatric HIV/AIDS care and treatment programs;
  • Use appropriate and rigorous statistical methodology to identify key lessons from data collected in CHAI programs, with the goal of supporting and improving HIV care and treatment;
  • Document and disseminate best practices in managing data to improve quality of HIV care and treatment, with a focus on pediatric HIV/AIDS care and treatment programs;

Skills/Experience required:

  • MPH (or equivalent) or equivalent work experience
  • Strong knowledge of programmatic monitoring and evaluation methodologies (qualitative and quantitative)
  • Excellent quantitative skills
  • Knowledge of HIV/AIDS care and treatment in resource-limited settings
  • Strong problem solving skills and analytical capabilities
  • Ability to multi-task and to be effective in high-pressure situations
  • Excellent communication skills – both written and oral
  • Ability to work effectively in a team

3. Position/Title: CSHOR Statistician/Database Developer
Location: Boston, MA

The Clinton Foundation HIV/AIDS Initiative (CHAI) is seeking a highly motivated individual with strong analytical, database development and communications skills to fill the position of Monitoring and Evaluation Statistician/Database Developer within CHAI’s Boston office.

Description:

The Statistician/Database Developer will take a leading role in the creation of databases to input, manage and analyze data to support and improve HIV care and treatment programs. This person will also be responsible for rigorous statistical analyses of data derived from the databases as well as data gathered through implementation research projects to inform local, national and international policy and best practices in HIV care and treatment. In the first year, the focus will be primarily on using data to support and improve prevention of mother-to-child transmission (PMTCT) programs. The Statistician/Database Developer will be a member of CHAI’s Boston-based Global M&E team, and will work in partnership with other CHAI global teams and CHAI country teams.

Responsibilities include:

  • Collaboration with colleagues to advise on the appropriateness of study designs and available statistical methods to approach implementation research questions;
  • Conducting statistical analyses;
  • Co-authoring reports containing actionable recommendations based on analyses performed;
  • Educating and training others regarding statistical methods;
  • Use appropriate and rigorous statistical methodology to identify key lessons from data collected in CHAI programs, with the goal of supporting and improving HIV care and treatment;
  • Design of robust, user-friendly databases able to capture large volumes of data on a regular basis from CHAI country teams and partner governments;
  • Provide technical assistance to CHAI teams, government, and organizational partners to enhance data management systems for improved quality of HIV treatment and care, with an initial focus on PMTCT programs;
  • Document and disseminate best practices in managing data to HIV care and treatment, with an initial focus on PMTCT programs.

Skills/Experience required:

  • MPH, MS (or equivalent) or equivalent work experience

4. Position/Title: Clinical Mentor: Nurses, Nurse Practitioners, and Medical Doctors
Location: Tanah Papua, Indonesia

CHAI is looking for motivated nurses, nurse practitioners, and/or medical doctors with at least 3 years of clinical experience in HIV/AIDS treatment. Experience working in a developing country is also helpful. We are looking for clinicians who have expertise in both didactic and practical teaching, as well as those with the management skills necessary to help a clinic become more efficient, capable, and ultimately self-sustainable in its ability to handle an increasing volume of HIV-infected patients.

HIV treatment and free ARV medication is currently available in Indonesia. The Indonesian Ministry of Health and the Provincial Health Offices in Tanah Papua (consisting of Papua and Papua Barat provinces) plans to scale up HIV identification and treatment on the island with the aid of expert clinicians who can improve clinical education and system management in hospitals and clinics. CHAI is committed to assist with this goal by placing expert clinicians in strategic ART sites to educate staff, advise on efficient HIV clinical management, and improve VCT capacity and Home Based Care while enhancing sustainability.

The term of this contract is 6 months to one year.

*Note that Tanah Papua belongs to Indonesia and is located west of Papua New Guinea (PNG). Safety concerns in Papua are low and do not reflect security warnings associated with travel to PNG. Violent crime, civil unrest and political tension in Tanah Papua are minimal and should not be confused with the high rates of violence and opportunistic crime in PNG.


Responsibilities:

  • Provide didactic and practical instruction on antiretroviral use and the identification of HIV exposed and infected children and adults
  • Strengthen existing mentoring team in Jayapura (capital of Papua Province) and develop additional mentoring teams in other sites within TanahPapua
  • Collaborate with CHAI Program Coordinator, provincial and district health offices and referral hospitals to create strategic plan(s) for a well-coordinated, integrated HIV/AIDS response.
  • Advocate and/or implement policies to scale up VCT at hospitals and community health centers (CHC) and improve Care & Treatment delivery
  • Develop a robust internal referral network within hospitals (e.g. TB, in-patient wards, maternal-child health) and a referral network from CHC to hospitals
  • Increase the appropriate use of PMTCT as well as solidify PMTCT protocol
  • Provide analysis to CHAI country team of possible interventions to improve care systems
  • Provide technical expertise on organization of work and task shifting
  • Implement monitoring & evaluation tools to assess clinic progress
  • Create standard operating procedures

Skills Required:

  • Strong knowledge of HIV/AIDS and at least 3 years of clinical HIV/AIDS experience
  • Fluency in English; proficiency in Bahasa Indonesia is a plus
  • Experience in teaching adult learners, case presentation skills and the use of powerpoint presentations
  • Understanding of healthcare systems in resource-limited settings
  • Excellent communication skills – both written and oral
  • Proficiency with Microsoft office software, i.e. Word, Excel and Powerpoint
  • Strong interpersonal skills
  • Willingness to work in rural, low-resource settings
  • Ability to work productively in a multi-cultural, international setting and to establish and maintain effective working relationships with counterparts in international agencies, local government bodies, non-governmental organizations, professional institutions and internal CHAI Team
  • Respect for the political processes and protocols involved in foreign government programs

Qualifications:

  • MD, RN, Nurse practitioner or similar degree with at least 3 years experience in HIV clinical care
  • International work experience, preferably in HIV treatment
  • Strong leadership skills
  • Self-motivated – able to work well with minimal supervision
  • Good team player
  • Open to learning in addition to an eagerness and desire to help others learn

CHAI is looking for motivated nurses, nurse practitioners, and/or medical doctors with at least 3 years of clinical experience in HIV/AIDS treatment. Experience working in a developing country is also helpful. We are looking for clinicians who have expertise in both didactic and practical teaching, as well as those with the management skills necessary to help a clinic become more efficient, capable, and ultimately self-sustainable in its ability to handle an increasing volume of HIV-infected patients.

Opportunities are available for short-term or long-term assignments in several countries.

Responsibilities:

  • Provide didactic and practical instruction on antiretroviral use and the identification of HIV exposed and infected children and adults
  • Assist in the scale up of voluntary counseling and testing (VCT)
  • Provide analysis to CHAI country team of possible interventions to improve care systems
  • Increase the appropriate use of PMTCT as well as solidify PMTCT protocol
  • Establish and maintain connections between the HIV clinic and other clinics (eg., TB, in-patient wards, maternal-child health) where HIV infected patients can be identified
  • Provide technical expertise on organization of work and task shifting
  • Implement monitoring & evaluation tools to assess clinic progress
