Honor the Legacy of Martin Luther King Junior at the Clinton Center
"Everybody can be great, because everybody can serve. You don't have to have a college degree to serve. You don't have to have to make your subject and your verb agree to serve. You don't have to know about Plato and Aristotle to serve. You don't have to know Einstein's "Theory of Relativity" to serve. You don't have to know the Second Theory of Thermal Dynamics in Physics to serve. You only need a heart full of grace, a soul generated by love.”
– Martin Luther King
On Monday, January 15, 2007 celebrate Dr. King’s birthday as a "day ON, not a day off" with our friends at City Year as they kick-off the Young Heroes Opening Ceremony in the Great Hall of the Clinton Library. The event will begin at 10:30 a.m. Following the ceremony, you're encouraged to participate in service projects organized by City Year throughout communities in Little Rock and North Little Rock, such as painting murals, planting gardens, and building green homes.
Please note the service portion of the day will start at 12pm with a rally at the Arkansas Flag and Banner, 800 West 9th St. and dress accordingly – closed toe shoes and clothing that can get dirty.
City Year's Young Heroes program, supported by a $1 million contribution from the program's National Lead Partner, Bank of America, is a day-long program on Saturdays for middle school youth. The program takes place in 16 City Year sites throughout the country. The mission of the program is to develop middle school youth into active civic leaders through community service and an interactive curriculum that focuses on the values of courage, compassion, cooperation and commitment.
The five-month Young Heroes program is developed and implemented by City Year corps members with community volunteer support. Modeling the City Year corps, these young people come together to work in diverse teams, serve a minimum of 80 hours and, in the process, earn the President's Volunteer Service Award. This year, 60 Young Heroes will pledge to serve the communities of Little Rock and North Little Rock.
