Press Release: “Peter Max Paints America” Coloring Contest Winners Announced

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (Apr. 25, 2009) -- The William J. Clinton Presidential Center announced the winners of the "Peter Max Paints America" coloring contest today in a ceremony in the Center's Great Hall. In conjunction with the exhibit, "Peter Max Paints America," the coloring contest was open to Arkansas children in grades Pre-K through 12. The contest encouraged children to channel their own creativity on a custom-designed coloring template, featuring an image of the Clinton Presidential Center and designed by Max himself. Local partners in the contest were Channel 7, the Arkansas Times and the THEA Foundation.

The over 1,500 entries received were preliminarily judged by a panel of local artists and media personalities, including Patty Criner, John Deering, Jane Hankins, Kevin Kresse, Barbara Pryor and Robin Steves. Ten finalists were chosen in each of the four categories (PreK - 2nd grade; 3rd - 5th grade; 6th - 8th grade; 9th - 12th grade), and sent to New York for final selection by Peter Max. Winners in each category are:

  • Pre K - 2nd Grade: Ariel Winston, Martin Luther King Interdistrict Magnet Elementary, Little Rock
  • 3rd - 5th Grade: Brianna Martin Timbo Elementary, Onia
  • 6th - 8th Grade: Mariah Golden Elmwood Middle School, Rogers
  • 9th - 12th Grade: Reed Durham Central High School, Little Rock

"I am thrilled that across the state of Arkansas, more than 1,500 promising young artists submitted entries to the Center's art competition," said President Clinton. "Each entry was unique; they are all wonderful works of art. I am pleased to congratulate all the participants on their impressive efforts."

Students were invited to color the template in the iconic, cosmic style of Peter Max. As a multi-dimensional creative artist, Max has worked with oils, acrylics, water colors, finger paints, dyes, pastels, charcoal, pen, ceramics, sculpture, collage video and computer graphics. More than 250 of Max's works, from across all creative mediums, will remain on display at the Clinton Library through May 25. Winning student artwork will also be on display throughout the life of the exhibition at the Library.

The "Peter Max Paints America" exhibit is included with admission to the Clinton Library.
