World AIDS Day

The Clinton Presidential Center observed World AIDS Day 2007 with the largest display of the AIDS Memorial Quilt. The Center displayed several blocks of the AIDS Quilt, which memorializes those who have lost their lives to this pandemic. Click here to view photos.

In addition to commemorating World AIDS Day, the Clinton Foundation HIV/AIDS Initiative (CHAI) is working every day to fight the AIDS pandemic. President Clinton launched CHAI in 2002. Today, CHAI is helping to bring affordable, lifesaving treatment to hundreds of thousands of people in dozens of countries. The Long Struggle: Presidential Actions and African American Civil Rights

This unique exhibit will examine the actions and influences of U.S. Presidents on civil rights issues during a one hundred year period, beginning with President Abraham Lincoln's first administration in 1860 and continuing through the major milestones of the civil rights movement during the 20th Century.

This must-see exhibit will focus on many of the decisions, laws, and acts signed by some of our Presidents and will examine in-depth how these presidential actions impacted the lives of the average African American citizen, both in Arkansas as well as throughout the country.

Arkansas Symphony Orchestra, River Rhapsodies Concert Series
Rags and Riches
7:00 p.m.

This program presents a delightful collection of chamber works of three centuries. Ravel’s Tzigane is a breathtaking showpiece for violin and piano, inspired by Gypsy music, while Spanish flavors permeate Navarra by Sarasate. Tchaikovsky memorialized a violinist friend in his anguished String Quartet No. 3, and Schoenberg commemorates violinist Adolph Koldofsy in his rhapsodic Phantasy. The concert opens with Graceful Ghost Rag for solo piano, William Bolcom’s modern take on an infectious jazz rhythm. The Sturgis Quartet with David Belcher, piano Meredith Maddox, violin Andrew Irvin, violin will play. Arkansas Symphony Orchestra's Sturgis Quartet

Arkansas Symphony Orchestra, River Rhapsodies Concert Series
Debusy's Shimmering Quartet
7:00 p.m.

Schubert’s “Quartet Movement” will forever remain a magnificent torso—fiery, intense and compelling in its brevity. Built from a single theme, Debussy’s only string quartet is rapture, ardor, color, and shimmering languor. Mendelssohn himself described his Quartet No. 1 as “spirited” and “grateful to the players”—an assessment that can be heard from the exuberance and vitality of its beginning through its brilliant final movement. The concert will be performed by the Quapaw Quartet. Arkansas Symphony Orchestra's Quapaw quartet Arkansas Symphony Orchestra's Quapaw Quartet

January 2007

January 16, 2007
Arkansas Symphony Orchestra, River Rhapsodies Concert Series
Mother Goose & More
7:00 p.m.

Enjoy an internationally-flavored program of kaleidoscopic variety, headlined by Ravel’s captivating musical retelling of five fairytales (including “Conversations of Beauty and the Beast,” “Sleeping Beauty,” “and “Tom Thumb”). Valerie Coleman’s light and breezy Umoja (Swahili for “unity”) echoes the tradition of call and response. The oboe’s famous “A440” (the pitch given when an orchestra tunes) is deliberately emphasized in John Steinmetz’s colorful Quintet. Ferenc Farkas had inspiration from Renaissance music in his Ancient Hungarian Dances, and Czech composer Jiri Jaroch’s Children’s Suite calls on all forces in his charming, refreshing nonet.

The concert features Etesian Winds with Eric Hayward, violin Ryan Mooney, viola Melita Hunsinger, cello John Dahlstrand, bass.
