Internships: Little Rock - Clinton Presidential Center
The William J. Clinton Presidential Center is located within a new 30-acre city
park along the Arkansas River in Little Rock. It consists of:
- The museum, which highlights the achievements of President Clinton's two terms in office
- The library and archives, which houses all of President Clinton's official papers and other historical material
related to the Clinton administration
- University of Arkansas Clinton School of Public Service
- The offices of the William J. Clinton Foundation
The William J. Clinton Presidential Center, through its community outreach and programming, Library
and Museum, and the University of Arkansas Clinton School of Public Service, advances the mission
of the William J. Clinton Foundation. With
leadership from President Clinton, the Center is prepared to engage the vital issues of the 21st Century. It
advocates peace and prosperity, freedom and security, and a global community rooted in shared values,
shared benefits and shared responsibility.
The Clinton Presidential Center requires the involvement of numerous people to accomplish its mission.
A significant entity of the Center is the Clinton Library and Museum, which is mainly administered by
the National Archives. The primary mission of the National Archives is the preservation of the
Presidential records, personal and donated papers and memorabilia of the Clinton Administration.
Therefore, a collaboration of dedicated employees and invaluable volunteers and interns comprise a
devoted, professional staff that represents and operates the Center. The Center is committed to creating
an environment that assists staff, volunteers, and interns in reaching their full potential. Through this
effort, visitors to the Clinton Presidential Center will be provided an educational and engaging experience
that should instill in them a better understanding of the Clinton Administration, the institution of the
Presidency and the American political system.
The University of Arkansas Clinton School of Public Service (UACS) opened
in Fall 2004 and its first students began classes in the fall of 2005. UACS
will be a unique unit within the University of Arkansas System. Operating under
the sponsorship of the Universitys three largest graduate campuses, it
will confer a Masters in Public Service degree, offer a Certificate in Public
Service, and sponsor non-credit courses for the general public. UACS also will
hold town hall meetings, symposia, conferences, lecture series, and other events
for its various audiences. It will cooperate extensively with the Clinton Presidential
Center in bringing internationally prominent leaders to Arkansas to participate
in educational and community demonstration programs.
Role Descriptions
Positions are available in seven main areas:
Finance:
The Clinton Foundation relies on donations. Donor relations and donation processing as well as membership services are handled by our finance office in Little Rock. In addition, the accounting operations as well as other finance and control operations are administered out of this office. Interns will be engaged for the most part in special analysis type projects that will require a facility with database type software and Excel. These projects tend to be detailed but require the ability to keep an eye on the big picture. Intern candidates who have a background in business studies including managerial accounting and finance as well as excellent computer skills should consider this area.
Museum Store:
The Clinton Museum Store is not only a direct reflection of the Clinton Presidential Library and the William J. Clinton Foundation—we interact with thousands of national and international visitors every week. The store is a showcase for many Arkansas-made products as well as high level contemporary crafts, artwork and jewelry from all over the world and carries historical, educational and inspirational items that cover multiple aspects of President Clinton and his Foundation's work. We look for interns who are creative and innovative in their approach to retail management, marketing, and product development. Job duties include but are not limited to merchandising the store, assisting in new product development, maintaining and updating inventory, creating promotional and marketing plans, negotiating with vendors, and managing special projects.
National Archives and Records Administration (NARA):
There are a few opportunities for interns that would like to work with the National Archives. The education specialist intern would work on developing education materials for school groups and would aid her in teaching and managing school group classes and tours. There are also opportunities to work with the audiovisual and textual archivists. Interns will assist and provide support for a number of archival projects, including creating finding aids for processed presidential record collections. Interns will preserve, arrange, and describe presidential records already in the public domain. Interns also will assist in processing small deed of gift collections, as well as work with a major audiovisual preservation project. Interns will handle routine office matters such as box retrieval, photocopying, faxing, and mailing.
Operations:
This office coordinates all departments of the Clinton Foundation and the Clinton Center in Little Rock to ensure open communications and planning between all aspects of the office. These interns will need to be highly organized, independent and resourceful. Interns will assist the Executive Director and Deputy Director on special projects and will participate in office management including technology and office maintenance. In addition, they will aid in meeting and event planning for special events and programming.
Special Events:
The Clinton Foundation offers premium event space within the Clinton Library to the community for rental. The Event Services Department manages space rental and event planning in the facility, which also involves working with the Little Rock Convention and Visitors Bureau to creatively market the space. In addition, this office is responsible for the many public programs and events that are held at the Center each year. Interns in this area will need to be flexible, energetic, and resourceful with an ability to multi-task. Their primary responsibilities will be to assist the events staff with client communication and management, database management, responding to requests for information, and event planning. This is a fast paced office and the interns will need to be able to respond effectively and quickly to all tasks.
University of Arkansas Clinton School of Public Service (UACS):
Interns at UACS will have opportunity to participate in a variety of activities, including working on special events (seminars, workshops, conferences, public forums); carrying out research on economic, social, and political development issues; facilitating visits to the School of distinguished scholars from around the world; and coordinating plans and activities between the academic programs of the University and the service/training programs of the Clinton Foundation.
Volunteer and Visitor Services:
The Clinton Presidential Center relies on a solid base of almost 500 volunteers to support and run its operation. Interns in this area will need to be highly organized, people-oriented, and able to communicate effectively. They should be flexible and able to operate in a positive and professional manner.
